About Us
he West Indian Ex-service men and women's Association is a registered charity, with the objective of providing a better life for ex-servicemen and ex-servicewomen, their families and dependents.
WIESA has been established for over 35 years and in that time we have witnessed the significant contributions of serviceman and women to the national call. The war zone in which our troops are currently fighting together with the numerous peace keeping missions, have been well publicised in the media. Service personal, by their nature do not complain.
To serve our nation is the highest achievement one can acheive. However, a nation is also judged by how it treats those who have served it. The stark reality is that once our service personnel return home, the statistics show that:
1 in 4 homeless persons have served in the forces
There are up 1,000 homeless ex-service men and women in London on any given night
Approximatly 1,500 army personnel have been referred to the MOD's Department of Community Mental Health (DCMH) since 2003, with possible mental health problems.
In addittion, there is a high suicide and divorce rate, with a number of ex-service personnel serving custodial sentences.
WIESA has indentified that these ex-service personnel are in need of:
Accommodation
Re-equipping for the workplace
Re-familiarisation with community life.
It is the intention of this organisation to embark on a sustainable, robust and user friendly programme to address the needs of our members and the wider community, at the same time providing our expertise to other stakeholders.
Our aims are not easy, but faced with the prospect of not being able to provide to the most needy members of our community, has ignited us into action. Our civic responsiblity will not allow us to ignore our duty.
